My wife, Jenni, our son, Isaac, and I live in the Kettle Moraine United Presbyterian Church manse. We have four cats, Nikki, Charlie, Whisper and Samantha. Jenni and I met while attending Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Kentucky and were married in October 2004. Our son was born on November 8, 2008.
I am the oldest of 5 children. My brother, Tim, and I were born in Evansville, Indiana. Soon after Tim’s birth, we moved to Paducah, Kentucky where my dad, Jack Walker, worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative and in various state and non-profit emergency medical programs before his retirement in 1990. My mom, Glenda, was a stay-at-home mom for a number of years, busy raising Tim, me, and our siblings, Greg, Beth, and Eric. She was very involved in the life of First Presbyterian Church in Paducah and we all participated in the life of the church. My earliest memory of God's call came was when I was 9 years old. While my mother was involved with singing in the Choir during Sunday services, my brothers, sister and I would sit with a friend of the family, Mrs. Nell Kester. One Sunday, after listening to a sermon, I looked up at Mrs. Kester and said that when I grew up, I wanted to be a Presbyterian Minister. She looked at me, patted me on the head, and told me that one-day that she was sure I would be. I never forgot the impact that had on the rest of my life. Later on my mom became the Choir Director and Secretary for Westminster Presbyterian Church in Paducah.
I enjoy camping, walking, fly-fishing, golf, tennis and gardening. I have a private pilot's license and enjoy flying Cessna 172 aircraft. However, my greatest joy is spending time with my family. Isaac is now walking and running, which of course means that Jenni and I are busy keeping up with a very happy and active toddler.
My first career was in the area of early childhood development. I graduated from Western Kentucky University with a BA in Psychology and MA in Child Development and Family Living. I have worked extensively with infants, toddlers and preschoolers including those with a wide range of mental and physical challenges. Before entering seminary, I worked for the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a director and coordinator of various programs related to early childhood development including licensed and regulated childcare and Head Start.
As followers of Jesus Christ, we are all called to serve others. Together, we can truly follow the words of Jesus in the Gospel according to Matthew: "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me" and in the Gospel according to John: "Love one another, just as I have loved you." I extend a personal invitation to come and "to worship, grow and serve" with us at Kettle Moraine United Presbyterian Church.
Peace,
Pastor Kurt :}
