 Call to Worship

Leader:  Come, let us learn to walk in the truth of God.

People: God comforts and helps us day by day.

Leader:  God’s loving care can always be trusted.

People:  God is king of heaven and earth, and we come to worship Him today.

 Greeting

Pastor:  The Lord be with you.

    People:   And also with you.

Prayer of the Day                   LISTEN IN

(Pass prayer requests to the aisle; ushers will collect them.)

*Hymnal:     #485           “To God Be the Glory”

 * Prayer of Confession                                  LISTEN IN

Eternal God, you are present everywhere in this world, claiming all peoples as your children, even among those who do not know your name. Yet how often we have refused to recognize and respect each other as brothers and sisters.  How often we have not spoken your word to our brothers and sisters with gentleness and reverence.  How often we have not spoken your word at all!  We confess that we have not done the things we should, but have in fact done what we ought not to do.  Holy God, cleanse us, fill us with your abiding Spirit, and empower us to live lives that truly reflect the radically inclusive love and compassion of your crucified Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.   Amen.

 *Silent Confession

*Declaration of Forgiveness

Pastor: God has chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he has promised to those who love him.  Friends, believe the good news.

People:   In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.  Amen.

*Response:  TOSB #195        “Spirit of the Living God”

Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me.

Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.

Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me.

 Children’s Message                                          LISTEN IN

 Prayer for Illumination                                LISTEN IN

 * Psalms 124 & 125 (Selected)

Leader:  If the Lord had not been on our side – let Israel say -

People:  If the Lord had not been on our side.

Leader:  If the Lord had not been on our side when men attacked us,

People:  When their anger flared against us, they would have swallowed us alive.

Leader:  The flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us,

People:  The raging waters would have swept us away.

Leader:   Praise be to the Lord, who has not let us be torn by their teeth.

People:  We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare.

Leader:   The snare has been broken, and we have escaped.

People:  Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Leader:  Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,

People:  Which cannot be shaken but endures forever.

*Affirmation of Faith –

In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus God kept his promises.  All that we can ever hope for was present in Christ; but the work of God in Christ is not over.  God calls us to hope for more than we have yet seen.  The hope God gives us is ultimate confidence that supports us when lesser hopes fail us.  In Christ God gives hope for a new heaven and earth, certainty of victory over death, and assurance of mercy in judgment beyond death.  This hope gives us courage for the present struggle.                        (from A Declaration of Faith)
